چکیده

Dynamics of heavy metals such as Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb and Cd in surface water of Brahmani river-estuarine system were studied taking 25 samples from different sampling locations along the complete stretch. Irrespective of season, Fe was most abundant in both river (avg. 260.15 μg / l ) and estuarine (avg. 119.9μg / l) samples, whereas Cd (avg. 1.59 μg / l) and Co (avg.1.55μg / l) were the lowest in the river and estuarine samples respectively. The average concentrations of all the dissolved metals were much higher than the world river average. The average concentrations Cr and Cd for the river were above the criteria of maximum concentration (CMC) as prescribed by US Environmental Protection Agency. Results of factor analyses revealed that anthropogenic contributions were the source for the increase in dissolved metal concentrations. Canonical discriminate function indicated that it was moderately successful in discriminating the groups as predicted. River Brahmani with an annual discharge of 18.58 x 10 m carries 6.907 x 10 tons of total heavy metals into Bay of Bengal and the calculated rate of erosion in the basin is 176.582 kg km year .

Role of estuarine natural flocculation process in removal of Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn

The flocculation of dissolved heavy metals is a process which has an important effect on decreasing the concentration of the colloidal elements during estuarine mixing of river water and sea or ocean water. During this important process, a large amount of colloidal elements change into particles in the form of flock and the dissolved loads decline. This study is performed to evaluate the mechani...

Study of trace metals during estuarine mixing of Jarahi River water with the Musa Estuary water

Flocculation of metals is one of the most important estuarine processes that occur due to the mixing of seawater and river water and colloidal metals undergo this process come in the form of flocculants. Due to the important role of flocculation process in producing suitable food sources for aquatic organisms and reducing the amount of input pollution into aquatic environments, the present stud...

Spatial and Temporal Variation in Copepod Community in the Helleh River Estuary – South Coast of Iran, Persian Gulf

Copepods are the main zooplankton assemblages in most tropical and semi-tropical estuaries. In this research, copepod population dynamics were investigated in Helleh River estuary, Persian Gulf during four seasons beginning from summer 2011 to spring 2012.  Samples were taken using plankton net with mesh size of 140 µm and vertical towing from 5 fixed-stations in mid-season. Results showed that...

An investigation on role of salinity, pH and DO on heavy metals elimination throughout estuarial mixture

One of the most paramount processes that play a considerable role in reducing the concentration of heavy metals during estuarine mixing is flocculation. Not only does such a process cause a huge percentage of metals to come into the particulate phase, but also it provides ample nutrients for the aquatic life. In the present study, impact of such factors as salinity, pH and DO on flocculation of...

Role of estuarine natural processes in removal of trace metals under emergency situations

Estuaries are well known for their potential in removing metal from fresh water to provide micro-nutrients to aquatic life. In the present investigation, we have tried to bring out the metal removal potential of estuaries during accidental spills. For this purpose artificial river water containing high concentration of Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb were mixed with sea water at different salinity regime...
